Friday the 13th History

Friday the 13th History

reprinted from History.com

The History of Friday the 13th

Long considered a harbinger of bad luck, Friday the 13th has inspired a late 19th-century secret society, an early 20th-century novel, and a horror film franchise.   Additionally, it has inspired not one, but two unwieldy terms—paraskavedekatriaphobia and friggatriskaidekaphobia—that describe fear of this supposedly unlucky day.

Just like walking under a ladder, crossing paths with a black cat or breaking a mirror, many people hold fast to the belief that Friday the 13th brings bad luck. Though it’s uncertain exactly when this particular tradition began, negative superstitions have swirled around the number 13 for centuries.

While Western cultures have historically associated the number 12 with completeness (there are 12 days of Christmas, 12 months and zodiac signs, 12 labors of Hercules, 12 gods of Olympus and 12 tribes of Israel, just to name a few examples), its successor 13 has a long history as a sign of bad luck.

The ancient Code of Hammurabi, for example, reportedly omitted a 13th law from its list of legal rules. Though this was probably a clerical error, superstitious people sometimes point to this as proof of 13’s longstanding negative associations.

Fear of the number 13 has even earned a psychological term: triskaidekaphobia.

According to biblical tradition, 13 guests attended the Last Supper, held on Maundy Thursday, including Jesus and his 12 apostles (one of whom, Judas, betrayed him). The next day, of course, was Good Friday, the day of Jesus’ crucifixion.

The seating arrangement at the Last Supper is believed to have given rise to a longstanding Christian superstition that having 13 guests at a table was a bad omen—specifically, that it was courting death.

Though Friday’s negative associations are weaker, some have suggested they also have roots in Christian tradition: Just as Jesus was crucified on a Friday, Friday was also said to be the day Eve gave Adam the fateful apple from the Tree of Knowledge, as well as the day Cain killed his brother, Abel.

An important milestone in the history of the Friday the 13th legend in particular (not just the number 13) occurred in 1907, with the publication of the novel Friday, the Thirteenth written by Thomas William Lawson.

The book told the story of a New York City stockbroker who plays on superstitions about the date to create chaos on Wall Street, and make a killing on the market.

The horror movie Friday the 13th, released in 1980, introduced the world to a hockey mask-wearing killer named Jason, and is perhaps the best-known example of the famous superstition in pop culture history. The movie spawned multiple sequels, as well as comic books, novellas, video games, related merchandise and countless terrifying Halloween costumes.

In more recent times, a number of traumatic events have occurred on Friday the 13th, including the German bombing of Buckingham Palace (September 1940); the murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens, New York (March 1964); a cyclone that killed more than 300,000 people in Bangladesh (November 1970); the disappearance of a Chilean Air Force plane in the Andes (October 1972); the death of rapper Tupac Shakur (September 1996) and the crash of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off the coast of Italy, which killed 30 people (January 2012).

Florida Keys to Reopen October 1

The Florida Keys will reopen to tourists starting October 1. This is about three weeks earlier than expected, according to the Miami Herald.

Large chunks of the popular vacation destination were decimated by Hurricane Irma. Moreover, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has reported that 25 percent of all homes in the Florida Keys were destroyed. 65 percent sustained major damage.

“We know we have a long way to go before the Keys fully recover,” added Monroe County Mayor George Neugent in a statement. “But because tourism is our top economic engine and many of our residents’ livelihoods depend on it, we also know we need to begin asking visitors to return.”

Bridges are open for travel.  Hospitals have reopened.  The Key West airport resumed commercial service. Additionally, power has been restored in roughly 99.8 percent of the state, according to FPL.

The wildly popular Fantasy Fest, a Key West staple, remains scheduled for October 20-29.

At a Time of Need…

Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma has devastated the Florida Keys up along the west coast of Florida.  Never has the great state of Florida and Floridians experienced such a time.  For such a time as this, at a time of need as this, is when we all have to pull together and help our fellow man.

As is typical with hurricanes, they take twists and turns, develop and travel in different directions until they finally hit their entrance point.  Hurricane Irma was no exception and followed this very track.  Initially, it was supposed to impact Miami as a Category 5.  Instead, it took as last minute turn to the west, impacting the Florida Keys beyond recognition, along with devastating the once beautiful coastal communities along the west coast of the state.

Strock & Tanner Mortgage/STC Loans is collecting canned goods and water for the displaced citizens of the Florida Keys. Between now and September 22nd, you may drop off whatever you can to help offset their losses. STC Loans is located at 8900 SW 117 Ave Suite C101. We feel so truly blessed to have seen the reaction of our fellow Miamians contributing to this effort.   They are dropping off different types of foods they fortunately did not need during #hurricaneirma.

At this time of need, for such a time of this, please consider contributing whatever you can to help thousands who have lost everything.

Celebrate Labor Day

Celebrate Labor Day

Labor Day History

Reprinted from Forbes

So why do we celebrate Labor Day?  Happy Labor Day, for those of you in the United States of America!  While having a day off of work to celebrate the end of summer is always a treat, you might be surprised at the real reasons we celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September each year. The Labor Day holiday was actually created out of the labor movement in the late 19th century. The Industrial Revolution was at its height in the late 1800s. According to History.com, during this time, “the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living.” And even though many states prohibited it, children as young as five or six were often forced to worked in mills, factories and mines.

Because of the long hours, unsafe and unsanitary working conditions, and poor treatment by management, labor unions organized and workers began holding strikes and protest rallies.

Over time, more and more states created the Labor Day holiday. Then, on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday of September a legal holiday, dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.

Celebrate Labor Day

So as you relax on your day off today (possibly with a cold beer in your hands), don’t forget to take a moment of silence to thank the hardworking men and women from the late 1800s for their efforts to create the much-improved working conditions we now enjoy.

Back to School Traffic Safety Tips

It’s that time of year again, back to school. As we’re all in the process of making sure we buy the correct school supplies for our kids, selecting uniforms, adhering to teacher requirements, and overall making sure all is in order, there’s one more very important aspect to keep in mind. Back to school traffic safety tips are key to ensuring the safety of everyone on the road during daily drop-offs and pickups.

Here are some back to school traffic safety tips to consider:

  • Watch school zone speed limits: 15 MPH is the limit, folks. Stay at this level or face getting a traffic ticket.
  • School Buses: flashing red lights on a school bus mean you can’t pass on either side of the bus. You must STOP. Bus drivers have a way to report your license plate to authorities so just stop.
  • Crosswalks: whether or not a crosswalk has a cross guard, obey school crosswalks. If you were to hit a pedestrian, stronger penalties than a mere traffic ticket will apply.
  • Drop off and Pick up locations at schools: use the school’s designated drop off and pick up areas in order to ensure the maximum safety for everyone.

Miami Solar Eclipse

Miami Solar Eclipse

Miami Solar Eclipse

August 21, 2017 — Great American Eclipse (Total Solar Eclipse)

A Few Reasons Why This Eclipse is Significant

1. 1st Total Solar Eclipse in 38 Years…

…for those in contiguous United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). The last time anyone in mainland US saw a total eclipse of the Sun was on February 26, 1979. If you live in the US and miss this event, you’ll have to wait 7 more years, until April 8, 2024, to see a total solar eclipse from a location in the contiguous United States.

2. Most North Americans Will Be Able To See Totality…

…if they are willing to drive that is. The total eclipse will only be visible along the Moon’s central shadow, which at its widest will be about 115 kilometers (71.5 miles), according to some sources. Its path will span from the country’s West Coast to the East Coast. The rest of North America, as well as Central America and northern parts of South America, will experience a partial solar eclipse. NASA has estimated that a majority of the American population lives less than a 2-day drive away from the path of totality.

3. A Once-In-A-Lifetime Event

While total solar eclipses are not rare—they occur twice every 3 years on average and can be seen from some part of the Earth—a total eclipse of the Sun that can be seen from the American West Coast to the American East Coast occurs less frequently. In fact, the last time a total solar eclipse was visible from coast to coast was almost 100 years ago, on June 8, 1918!

What makes this eclipse extra special is that it is the first time since the total solar eclipse of January 11, 1880 that a total solar eclipse will occur exclusively over the continental United States—no other country will see totality, though many countries will see a partial eclipse of the Sun.

Because of these reasons, the eclipse is also being called the Great American Eclipse.

4. Parts of 14 American States Will Go Dark…

…for the 2 minutes of totality. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon will be the first location on continental US soil to see totality. The partial phase of the eclipse will begin here at 9:04 am local time. Lincoln City, Oregon will also be one of the first locations in the country to experience totality.

Oregonians will also be the first to see totality as the Moon’s shadow moves east at an average speed of about 3600 km/h (2237 mph). After Oregon, the eclipse will move through Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina. Montana and Iowa are the only states where the path of totality will pass through unpopulated areas. People in Charleston, South Carolina will be some of the last people in the US to see totality.

Nashville, Tennessee is one of the few large cities in the United States to fall completely within the eclipse’s path of totality. Interestingly, only some parts of Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri will be able to see a total solar eclipse.

5. Totality Will Be Spectacular

Totality in a solar eclipse begins and ends with a diamond ring.

If you are lucky enough to be in the path of totality, you are in for an astronomical treat, weather permitting, of course. When the eclipse begins, at 1st contact, it will appear as if the Moon is taking a bite out of the Sun. As the eclipse progresses, the sky will get darker, the temperature will drop, and if you pay attention, animals and birds will become quieter.

At 2nd contact, which is when totality begins, Baily’s Beads become visible. As the Moon completely covers the Sun’s surface, the diamond ring can be seen. You might also see pink spots called prominences near the diamond. These spots are caused by gases on the Sun’s surface.

Totality is the only time when one can see the corona, the Sun’s atmosphere. At 3rd contact, Baily’s Beads will once again become visible and a second diamond ring may appear.

6. Stars During the Daytime

As the sky turns dark, planets and stars hidden in the sky by the Sun’s bright light will reappear. Look for Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus during totality.

7. You Will Need Eye Protection

Do not look directly at the Sun, before, during or after the eclipse without any protective eyewear.

Looking at the Sun with your naked eyes is highly dangerous and can even cause blindness. The safest way to see a solar eclipse is to wear protective eclipse glasses or use a pinhole projector you can easily make yourself.

Did You Know? This is the First Total Solar Eclipse in USA Since 1979

This is the first total eclipse of the Sun visible from the contiguous United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) since February 26, 1979. The last time a total eclipse was visible from coast to coast was on June 8, 1918.
Eclipse calculations usually accurate to a few seconds.

Next Total Solar Eclipse will be on Jul 2, 2019.

To Buy or to Rent in Miami?

Buy or rent in Miami?

To Buy or To Rent in Miami?   That is the Question…

Real estate is tricky especially if you happen to be a picky person. This is proven to be true because picky people have all these ideas in their minds of what they want and hope they can match to their taste. Buying versus renting can be a strategy, depending upon your objectives.  So, the question remains, do you buy or rent in Miami?

As a homeowner, you need to think about how long you are anticipating on staying in the house.  Also, how much maintenance will the property require?. Renting a house is always a popular option because you are not stuck permanently. However,  the downside here is that you have monthly or recurring payments to follow with no vested ownership. On the other hand, buying a house is great, too, because if you have a family and are looking to settle down this is probably the better option for you.

Real Estate Slump

Real Estate slump

What Summer Slump?

Real estate in South Florida fluctuates depending on the season. While summer is considered to be slow due to the weather here in Miami, there’s no summer slump here.  We’re as busy as ever in the ReMaxx/Quintero Team.  There’s no real estate slump in our office.

There are key factors to consider whether you are looking to buy or rent a house. The first and most important one is location.  As the saying goes, “location, location, location”.  We cannot stress enough how important it is to find a location convenient for you, where real estate will continue to appreciate.  Whether the purchasing process takes one day or one year, it makes a difference knowing that you will be comfortable in the house of your dreams.
